Spark Scala Tutorial
A short service army officer can leave the organization at 5 or 10 years (YES BOTH OPTIONS STILL EXIST), not between them.
But any officer, either short service or permanent commissioned officer can leave anytime by resigning their commission based on compassionate ground. This is process of RESIGNATION, it may or may not be accepted by the board and this complete process takes around one year minimum.
My advice would be seek the release at the earliest opportunity that is five years, after that its better to complete your tenure than getting entangled in application of resignation.
I hope it clear some basic doubt, feel free to ask more.
One note - there are no more formal boards at five years of service unlike before so all desiring officer need to submit their individual application to seek release.
But before the completion of ten years, formal board takes place and everyone is asked to choose between release, permanent or extension for futher four years.
